Police are on the hunt after the suspected stolen car was set alight on a Wigan village green.

A Vauxhall Corsa which was suspected to have false registration plates was abandoned on the grass on Mayfield Road around 3 am on 21st June.

Three males were seen smashing the windows of the stolen car and throwing something inside to ignite it before leaving the scene.

Wigan Fire Crew were soon on the scene to put out the blaze, dousing the flames in around 20 minutes, unfortunately the vehicle has been damaged beyond repair.

A spokesperson has said that it is likely whatever was thrown into the car contained a form of accelerant to quicken the fire.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 or, alternatively, ring the freephone Crimestoppers line anonymously on 0800 555111.
